When “Star Trek” actor Chris Pine hosted Saturday Night Live, it was inevitable that viewers would get a hilarious “Star Trek” skit from the cast.
In a video posted on Saturday we see a lost episode of the classic “Star Trek” TV series where Spock (Kyle Mooney) enlists his brother from Queens, New York — Spocko (Bobby Moynihan) — to help Captain Kirk (Pine) and the crew of the Enterprise.
Pine does a dead-on William Shatner as Kirk impression complete with dramatic pauses and one eyebrow raised.
But it’s Moynihan who steals the show as the Jackie Gleason-esque, New York-accented mechanic Spocko — who isn’t quite as logical and reserved as his brother Spock.
“Hey how ya doin’?” Spocko says. “The name’s Spocko, reportin’ for duty over here. I was in the wrong hallway. I opened the door and I almost got sucked out into space! Now that’s a Star Trek!”
In the skit, it’s explained that Spocko was created as a ratings grab from the network to appeal to a broader audience. But since the episode was so horrible, it never aired.
SNL cast member Kenan Thompson also does a delightful impression of astrophysicist and “Star Talk” host Neil deGrasse Tyson who serves as the host who introduces and narrates the lost “Star Trek” episode.
Here’s hoping we get more deGrasse Tyson skits from Thompson in the future.
