The digital wallet crowd is getting a little more packed in the US, with Apple and
being joined by two new competitors from the East.
The partnership enables Chinese tourists who visit the country to use their mobile wallets at 4 million merchants and retailers.
It comes after WeChat Pay was also reported to have expanded into US through a partnership with integrated mobile payment platform Citcon. The WeChat messaging app is huge in China, with over 700 million users as of last June, according to eMarketer.
China is one of US’ top five visiting countries, where 90 percent of the mobile payment market is dominated by Alipay and WeChat Pay, says Bloomberg.
Alibaba did not immediately respond to CNET’s request for comment.
Mobile wallets are quickly gaining traction around the world, especially in India, where the prime minister wiped out the country’s most commonly used notes to get Indians to go cashless. In the US, market analyst Juniper Research estimated more than 150 million people will begin making payments digitally by end of the year, with Apple Pay leading the way.
